Lent Day 20: Polly Shorts

I don't know if Polly Shorts is somewhere near half way in the Comrades Marathon. You should know me well enough by now to know that I'll never know where Polly Shorts makes it's appearance on the route. 

The fact of the matter is I've hit my Polly Shorts today. I have 130 reports to edit by 8:00 am, I'm half way through my blogging marathon, I'm desperate need of a holiday and there isn't a water table in sight.

Can I get a witness?

 The above picture is singlehandedly both the worst and the best picture ever taken of me. And because Dan Eager's try will go down as a truly iconic moment in Kearsney's history my double chins and psychotic eyes will now also be immortalized. The photo has gone viral and has given my family, friends and vague acquaintances great, great joy.  But I love this picture for all its horror because it shows me for who I am. It is a raw statement of my spirit.   Because I am a witness. Because I celebrate the victories of those I care about with wild abandon and overzealous joy. Because when the people I love win, I win. And because I always want to be on the sidelines cheering you on, in victory, or defeat.  This intense need to see my people flourish is why I became a teacher. Dear Sharon

  It was a bad night last night. Gray vomited for most of the night. Stephen silently nursed his impending stomach bug. And at two in the morning I Googled things I shouldn't like - 'Child just had swine flu, now has stomach bug. Low white blood cell count - what does it mean? Is house mould making my child sick? Autoimmune disorders. Symptoms for lupis'.  Early this morning, before the sun rose, I emailed my various bosses to tell them I would not be coming in to work today. Due to various commitments in the past three weeks I wasn't able to nurse Gray through his tonsillitis that then developed into swine flu. I worked Sundays and every weekday til 22.00. It's a busy time in my job and I sucked it up.  But this morning I just knew I couldn't leave Gray sick at home one more time.
